Roots & Shoots Welcomes Multi-Sensory Playroom

St John’s Town Hall was filled with laughter and the sound of soft musical chimes this Tuesday morning as the Roots & Shoots Early Years Group celebrated the opening of their new Multi-Sensory Playroom. Designed specifically for toddlers and babies under five, the room is packed with interactive elements to promote early years discovery.

Featuring soft natural textures, organic wool cushions, handmade wooden puzzles, and a dedicated low-level clay molding station, the playroom is designed as a calm, unhurried space. It offers a gentle sanctuary away from the hustle of digital screens, allowing toddlers to explore at their own pace.

“We wanted to build something tactile and grounding,” says playroom coordinator Mary. “Sensory play is vital for brain development, and by providing a beautiful, peaceful space, we support parent wellbeing too. It is a place where parents can slow down, share a cup of tea, and connect with other families.”

The Roots & Shoots playgroup operates weekly during term time and is open to all parents and carers in Upper Weardale with zero booking required.
